Joyce, Sylvia Beach and Shakespeare and Company

Tomorrow 16 June is Bloomsday.

It is now 104 years and six months since Sylvia Beach published Ulysses, in the place she created , Shakespeare and Company, her special bookshop, 1919 in Paris).

Sylvia Beach was a marvel of a human being. She saw James Joyce depressed, unable to find a publisher and she said : I will publish it if you wish.

She published 1000 copies of Ulysses on February 2, 1922, on James Joyce’s 40th birthday.

Here she is speaking forty years after making history publishing James Joyce’s history-making novel.
